Preparing for Spring:  Green Home Tips
After staying inside for most of the winter, spring is a time to enjoy the outdoors and prepare your home for warmer weather.  We've assembled these tips to help you create a healthy, green home this spring.
Make the switch to green cleaners.  Traditional cleaning products contain numerous chemicals that can aggravate lungs, make it difficult to breathe and are hard on the environment.  Look for products that don't contain VOC's, phosphates or chlorine.  Save on green cleaning supplies with coupons from Seventh Generation.  Want to try making your own cleaners?  Check out these recipes and tips.
  • House plants can also help indoor air quality (IAQ).  If you don't already have some, consider adding ones that do an excellent job of soaking up toxins.  Try ivy, Boston ferns, or peace lilies.
  • Open your windows!  Today's building envelopes are tight, designed to minimize drafts and air leaks.  This also contributes to poor indoor air quality because fresh, outdoor air doesn't mix with indoor air.  If open windows and a clean home don't take care of IAQ issues, contact us about a complimentary indoor air quality analysis.  This test can pinpoint problems and suggest solutions to solve IAQ issues.
  • Sprinkle baking soda over your carpet prior to vacuuming.  This is a natural option for absorbing odors.
  • Install a clothesline outside or in your laundry room.  This will save energy and provide a solution for delicates that can't go in the dryer.
  • Get rid of clutter by donating items to Goodwill, a local non-profit group, or posting them on Freecycle.
  • Recycle old clothing and fabric scraps into dust rags.
  • Schedule a tune-up on your air conditioning system.  Regular maintenance keeps your system running efficiently and helps take care of issues that could cause the equipment to break down.  Click here for a discount on your AC tune up.
  • Start composting.  It not only reduces the amount of waste that heads to the landfill, it also provides you with free, nutrient rich soil for your garden, landscaping and house plants.
  • Speaking of landscaping, skip the fertilizer and constant watering by using native plants.
  • Spring is a great time to tackle home improvement projects.  Donate, recycle or reuse any materials that are removed from your home.  Use low or no VOC paints and sealers, and don't forget to change the filter in your HVAC system if any projects create excessive dust (sanding floors, drywall, etc.)
These systems may also qualify for up to a 30% federal tax credit.
