Avoid Common Winter Heating & Plumbing Problems
Winter is filled with holidays, snow sports and unfortunately, can be filled with plumbing and heating problems.  Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common heating and plumbing issues brought on by winter.

Avoid frozen waterlines.

  • If you'll be out of town for an extended vacation, consider turning off your water and draining lines.  This will keep pipes from freezing and bursting in the event of a power outage.  If you won't be gone long, or if you're not concerned about a power outage, open cabinet doors so warm air from the room can warm up pipes.
  • If you haven't done so already, turn off outside hose faucets, drain hoses and leave them disconnected from spigots.

Avoid a "no heat" scenario.

  • Check your furnace filter monthly and change as needed.  Believe it or a not, a dirty filter can sometimes cause a furnace to shut down.  Stay warm by keeping track of how long your filter has been in (write the date on the side prior to putting in the new filter) and changing it before it impedes airflow.  If you aren't sure how long your filter should last, consult a professional.  Always keep a few extra filters on hand so there's no excuse not to replace a dirty filter.
  • Have your heating system serviced each winter.  This helps stop issues before they turn into big problems, keeps the system running efficiently, and helps increase the life of your equipment.

If you do lose heat or experience frozen water lines, call us.  We have 24-hour service, 7 days a week.  Stark's Inc. also offers preventative maintenance, service for heating and cooling equipment, and complete plumbing service.
