Combat Winter's High Heating Costs

With temperatures still in the 80's, it may not seem like now is the time to think about the winter heating season.  However, now is the best time to prepare for fall and winter's colder temperatures.  We've all seen reports calling for record natural gas, propane and heating oil prices, but what can be done?

If your heating system is over 10 years old, it's time to seriously consider replacing it.  The EPA offers other signs it's time to replace.

If reduced operating costs are a top priority, consider our top three choices for efficiency and performance:
  • Geothermal is 3-5 times more efficient than standard forced air systems.  For those who may not have space for a geothermal loop, ask us about the Acadia system.  It provides the efficiency of geothermal without the need for a buried loop system.
  • Dual-fuel or heat pump systems use an electric heat pump, commonly combined with a gas furnace.
  • Lennox high efficiency forced air systems provide superior comfort and lower operating costs.  The Lennox G71P high efficiency furnace received a silver rating by The HVAC News in the HVAC high efficiency residential equipment category.
Financing options are available for any project $1,000-$25,000.  If you'd like a free estimate on any of these highly efficient heating options, contact us.

If you have a newer system, try these tips to help keep bills down.
Tips for an Eco-Friendly Fall

Compost leaves and other yard waste instead of adding it to the landfill.

Save gas and support the local economy by shopping at the local farmer's market for your favorite fall produce.  Pick up a book on organic gardening and plan to grown your own fruits and veggies next year.

Stay comfortable at a lower temperature by reversing your ceiling fan.  When looking up at your fan, the blades should turn clockwise during winter months.  This will help push warm air down, forcing it to recirculate.

Cool weather is a great time for coffee and hot tea.  Read these tips for responsible beverage choices.

Check your filter monthly and replace as needed.  Dirty filters impede air flow, reduce efficiency and can even lead to system failures in some cases.

Outfit yourself for Halloween with clothing and accessories from Goodwill or another resale shop.
